Royal Pythons are found all over Western and Central Africa, but most of the snakes we see in captivity come from Benin, Ghana and Togo, where they have been farmed in captivity.
In most cases this is where large gravid females are captured and kept until they have laid their eggs, the females are then released, and the eggs are then put into larges pits or sheds until they hatch.
The name Royal Python comes from its Latin name which is PYTHON REGIUS, which translated means Royal Python, it is also known as a Ball Python because of its habit of rolling into a ball when threatened.
The average size of a baby royal python is between 7 to 11 inches (18-28cm). In adulthood they grow to an average size of four feet, the females are usually slightly bigger than the males in length and girth.
Royal Pythons live, on average, to the age of 20 to 25 years in captivity, although records show many living well into 30 years and more, one Royal Python has been recorded to live to the age of 48.
